HDR Contest

Whether you're already an HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging fan or not, Unified Color Technologies has announced a contest you should look into. After all, there's $30,000 in prizes involved!

Last year Unified Color Technologies introduced a new HDR program called “HDR PhotoStudio.” For those of you unfamiliar with HDR, it’s the process of shooting the same scene at different exposures (sometimes called “bracketing”) and then combining those images into one final photo that merges the best highlight and shadow information. This allows us to extend the range of light we can reproduce from a scene. Photographers have been doing this for a long time, but it’s only become easy with the advent of digital photography. And by “easy” I mean more possible, by combining multiple captures in a layer-based program like Photoshop. Now we have software packages, like HDR PhotoStudio that do the merging for us, in a much easier and better way.

If you haven’t tried HDR yet, you should, and this contest gives you a great reason to go out and do it. You can find the information (rules, prizes, etc.) at http://www.unifiedcolor.com/contest. Not surprisingly, you have to create your image(s) using their software, but you can download a fully functioning 30-day demo version of it from their website and use that. The fifteen prizes (including a photo trip) they’re offering are a great reason to give HDR a try.
